By not long after sunrise on the morning after, an imperfect
method of determining a college football champion had systematically
cleared every obstacle the University of Florida had faced to
produce the most memorable triumph the Gators have known.
"We can say it now," Steve Spurrier said in the final anticipation
of the obvious Friday morning, his tone still seeking confirmation.
"We're No. 1?"
The response heard by the Gators coach was as immediate and
convincing as his team's 52-20 victory over Florida State in the
63rd Sugar Bowl on Thursday night.
