Or should I say Dartford?
Use the old name, from founder Anson Dart?
Or the new name, taken from the lake?
Well, not new. Less old. Green Lake has been Green Lake since
1871, but it was Dartford first, and even today, within a stone's
throw of the Green Lake City Hall, you will find Dartford Travel and
Cruise, Dartford Design Center and the Dartford Inn.
How deep runs this identity crisis? The folks who preserve Green
Lake's past call themselves the Dartford Historical Society, which
suggests either a serious civic schizophrenia (hey, the mayor of
Green Lake is also the director of the Dartford Historical Society)
or a community at peace with its historical alias.
