Two decades, two years and 11 days ago American Ambassador Graham
Martin tucked the U.S. flag under his arm, climbed atop the embassy
in Saigon and fled the devastated city by helicopter.
A generation away from that dark moment in U.S. history, the first
U.S. ambassador to Communist Vietnam arrives in the capital, Hanoi,
today on a mission of healing and warming relations between the
one-time enemies.
Former congressman Pete Peterson, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for
61/2 years, will try to bring Washington a step closer to a trade
pact with Hanoi and to find a cure for the wartime hangover both
countries still suffer.
