Last week the beat writers covering the Philadelphia Eagles
gathered for their annual start-of-the-season briefing with coach
Ray Rhodes.
It was a wide-ranging, no holds barred session, and the typically
taciturn Rhodes was feeling good and flashing his sense of humor that
the public seldom sees.
Someone brought up the schedule.
"Well, we open with the Giants, and they're really improved,"
said Rhodes. "And then we play Green Bay."
At that point Rhodes raised his chin, broke into a wide grin and
continued to speak, only with his eyes shut for effect.
"Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder . . . they can't see 'em but even
they know what Green Bay's doing," Rhodes said.
