Hotter weather is needed to nudge corn crops to maturity in much
of Wisconsin, the state crop report released Monday shows.
Just 2% of the state's corn is in the dent stage considered the
minimum maturity needed for harvest compared with 2% at this time
last year and a five-year average of 4%.
In the dent stage, corn begins losing moisture and a dent appears
on each kernel.
"The way things are going, it's probably losing ground every day,"
said Matt Glewen, a University of Wisconsin Extension agent for
Calumet County.
Calumet County farmers like to see corn dented by Sept. 1 but
probably will not come close to that this year due to unseasonably
cool weather, Glewen said. Corn needs ...
