Wisconsin ranks last in the nation in a state-by-state study of
where the federal government spends its money, according to a new
report.
In 1996, the federal government spent $3,894 per person in
Wisconsin 77% of the national per-capita average of $5,072, a
report by the Northeast-Midwest Institute says.
Wisconsin's two U.S. senators, Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, said
a key reason for the low ranking was the lack of big military bases
and defense plants in the state.
"It also means our economy is less dependent on the federal
defense budget, and given recent base closings and military
downsizing, that is probably a good thing," Feingold said.
