Indonesia's top military commander warned today that soldiers
will crack down on students who move their demonstrations to the
streets, and the government announced an increase in fuel,
electricity and transportation prices that is likely to aggravate
social unrest.
"There is proof that if students go out of the campus, the
protests become uncontrollable," Gen. Wiranto, the defense minister
and chief of the armed forces, was quoted as saying after a meeting
with President Suharto. "Therefore, I have ordered the military to
take stern action against activities that are clearly moving toward
anarchy, like in Medan."
