Officials in Brookfield and Elm Grove announced Wednesday they would seek to secede from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.

The move comes less than a year after the communities settled their 13-year "sewer wars" with the district.

Citing a new study, the two Waukesha County communities say it appears they and the rest of the district's customers would save millions of dollars if Brookfield and Elm Grove treat all their sewage at Brookfield's plant rather than adding more sewage capacity to MMSD's system.
