For civic leaders in Des Moines two years ago, Proffitt's purchase
of locally based Younkers was worrisome.
They feared the buyout of Iowa's leading department store chain
would mean fewer jobs, less money for charities and the loss of
executives with key leadership roles in the community.
But nearly two years after the sale, Des Moines has a message for
Milwaukee after Proffitt's announcement that it plans to buy Carson
Pirie Scott & Co.:
Don't worry. It's been OK.
"I would say it's almost a non-event, a low-profile event," said
G. David Hurd, the retired chairman of the Principal Financial Group
and co-chairman of Des Moines' Downtown Partnership.
