The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District would eliminate 50 jobs and cut spending by $2 million next year, under a proposed $72.9 million operating and maintenance budget for 1998.

Most of the jobs to be cut are at the Jones Island and South Shore sewage treatment plants and engineering services.

Some of the positions already are vacant and the sewerage district expects to avoid layoffs by transferring employees to other jobs, officials said. MMSD would collect a total of $51.5 million in residential and commercial user charges the same amount as this year to help pay for operating its sewage plants and regional collection system in 1998, according to budget documents.
