Article: Palestinians accused of abuses Watchdog group calls human rights conditions under Arafat `deplorable'

Human rights abuses ranging from jailhouse torture to denial of due process, academic freedom and freedom of expression are widespread in Palestinian self-ruled areas, a New York-based watchdog group said in a report to be released today.

Human Rights Watch/Middle East called human rights conditions under Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority "deplorable" and urged quick action to ensure safeguards for the rights of suspects in custody and freedom of expression.
