Human rights abuses ranging from jailhouse torture to denial of
due process, academic freedom and freedom of expression are
widespread in Palestinian self-ruled areas, a New York-based
watchdog group said in a report to be released today.
Human Rights Watch/Middle East called human rights conditions
under Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority "deplorable" and urged
quick action to ensure safeguards for the rights of suspects in
custody and freedom of expression.
The findings echo reports by other international rights
organizations as well as Palestinian groups, which have documented a
pattern of abuse since the start of Palestinian self-rule in May
1994.
