The growing problem of life-threatening latex allergies for health
workers and patients alike has prompted a state legislator to
propose a ban on the use of powdered latex gloves in Wisconsin.
Rep. Sheldon Wasserman (D-Milwaukee) has drafted a bill that also
would set limits on the latex protein content of gloves and plans to
seek legislative sponsors Monday. Oregon, New York and Minnesota are
considering similar bills, he said.
Latex allergy in its early stages causes hives and itching, but it
can produce a severe reaction called anaphylaxis, in which airways
suddenly tighten and blood pressure plummets, sometimes leading to
death.
