Starting out as a kind of Life magazine for the counterculture, Rolling Stone has survived and prospered and now claims a circulation of over 1 million. This week it celebrates its 30th anniversary with a massive special issue devoted to the women of rock.

Of course, with time and success has come the kind of mainstream acceptance the magazine once opposed as a matter of definition. There's also the sticky problem of how to remain current and attract younger readers without alienating the core group of boomer readers who have supported the magazine since Jann S.
