Spencer Smith was a foot soldier in the struggle for workplace
diversity, and his fighting spirit will be missed, black
professionals and business leaders said.
Smith, 54, died Nov. 17 at his Glendale home. He had cancer.
As president of Smith, Gilkey Associates Inc., a Milwaukee
diversity consulting firm, Smith led the push to change the face of
local companies. Smith's wife of 30 years, Patricia Gilkey-Smith,
was his partner.
Hundreds of people from all walks of life attended services for
Smith last week at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 914 E. Knapp St. He
was a longtime member of St. Paul's, where he served as senior
warden.
