Eleanor Conners Bell, a force in the preservation of historic
buildings, died Sunday at Lasata Care Center in Cedarburg after a
stroke. She was 77.
The Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission honored Bell in May
"for pioneering preservation efforts." She co-founded and was past
president of Land Ethics Inc., an organization that worked to save
and restore historic buildings.
Land Ethics was unsuccessful in getting the county to save the
Chicago and North Western railroad depot at the east end of Wisconsin
Ave. It was torn down in 1968.
"That broke her heart," Bell's daughter, Rosemary Ehle, said.
