It's become axiomatic by now that TV offers women a greater
variety of roles than movies do.
To one 12-year-old actress in particular, it has offered some of
the best.
Jena Malone became an instant sensation last fall with two
Showtime cable movies, the solid "Hidden in America" and the
white-hot "Bastard Out of Carolina." Two months ago she starred in
TNT's "Hope," and now she has the title role in a CBS original based
on Kaye Gibbons' much-praised novel, "Ellen Foster" (tonight at 8,
Channel 58).
Girl power, indeed.
Like most of the characters Malone has portrayed, Ellen is a kid
in big trouble. In "Bastard," trouble took the form of an abusive
