Avoiding a doomsday scenario was the order of the day as the
United States learned its World Cup fate Thursday at a sold-out
soccer stadium in Marseille, France.
The verdict: Doom and gloom averted, great difficulty ahead.
The U.S. was tossed into Group F with three-time World Cup
champion Germany, a rising Yugoslavian team and unpredictable Iran
during the World Cup draw. The Americans will open against Germany
on June 15 in Paris, then will play Iran in Lyon (June 21) and
Yugoslavia in Nantes (June 25) in the opening round.
U.S. coach Steve Sampson said his dream was to direct the
Americans into the third round, but he knows even reaching the
second round will require a Herculean ...
