Avoiding a doomsday scenario was the order of the day as the United States learned its World Cup fate Thursday at a sold-out soccer stadium in Marseille, France.

The U.S. was tossed into Group F with three-time World Cup champion Germany, a rising Yugoslavian team and unpredictable Iran during the World Cup draw.
