Private-public economic development collaborations are the
country's best hope for urban revitalization in places like
Milwaukee, economist Laurence H. Meyer believes.
Meyer, a Federal Reserve Board governor, credited collaborative
efforts for affordable housing as largely responsible for America's
record-high 66% homeownership rate and told a University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee audience recently that economic development
should be the next priority.
Banks have a legal obligation to help, he stressed in a speech
last week sponsored by the university's Urban Studies Program.
