Nearly 40 years after becoming a city, New Berlin officials think
maybe it's time they had a downtown.
The city is about to spend money planning a 21st-century version
of the old town square, a civic meeting and business center at the
triangle formed by National Ave. and Moorland and Coffee roads.
In the five decades since the end of World War II, subdivisions have
replaced New Berlin's farm fields and the city has grown to a
population of nearly 36,000. But through all that growth, New
Berlin has failed to develop much of an identity beyond its high
schools.
There's never been anything resembling a downtown.
