Like a giggle of White House interns, Wisconsin conservation wardens have been in the news a lot this spring.

It started back in February with a startling announcement that the warden force was understaffed to the point where it could no longer carry out its responsibilities.

Gov. Tommy G. Thompson pounced on that like a coyote all over fresh meat. He, properly, devised a plan that, we are told, will add 18 wardens to the staff yearly until it is up to standard. Then, in mid-March, a story broke on these pages that the warden force was embarking on a program designed to make popple cops "user-friendly."
