Article: D.C. Orders Pit Bulls Out of City Housing; Violent Dogs Seen As Safety Threat

D.C. officials are launching a major eviction campaign in the city's public housing complexes this week, aiming to remove hundreds of menacing dogs -- primarily pit bulls -- by enforcing the "no pets" clause in every rental agreement.

The effort comes amid increasing complaints from residents about the dogs fighting each other and intimidating children, police and public housing officials said, not to mention incidents of biting. Animal control officials say the dogs often are mistreated. Citywide, police have shot 76 dogs -- most of them pit bulls -- during confrontations in the last four years.
