Due to their relatively high numbers, wolves in Minnesota, Upper
Michigan and Wisconsin might be eligible for removal from the
endangered species list. The responsibility for wolves will then
fall into the hands of the respective state departments of natural
resources. Unfortunately, the Minnesota DNR has always supported
a "sport" hunting-trapping season on the wolf. As recently as 1995,
it stated wolf numbers should be reduced by a whopping 45%.
The Wisconsin DNR has a good handle on wolf population numbers.
But with wolf numbers unknown in Minnesota, a scientifically based
population assessment should be conducted.
