Gov. Tommy Thompson will seek $1.2 million in general purpose revenue to hire 18 new game wardens as a first step in solving a critical staff shortage in the state's conservation law enforcement agency.

Acting quickly to defuse a potentially explosive situation, the governor directed the Department of Natural Resources to begin work on the project immediately with the state Legislature and the governor's office.
