Article: Illinois to test Lake Michigan smallmouth bass for PCBs

Smallmouth bass in Lake Michigan will be tested for possible PCB contamination after a recent sampling of the game fish in harbors along Chicago's south side showed unhealthy levels of the cancer-causing chemical.

The hard-fighting smallmouth bass is very popular with anglers, and word of the contamination concern comes as Illinois' conservation agency moves to protect the fish with catch-and-release rules.

"If you can't keep them and eat them, it shouldn't be a problem," said Tim Schweizer, a spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources. "They are separate issues, but it mitigates a lot of concern about that fish if people are just going to catch them for sport." Still, the ...
