Wisconsin and cheese are synonymous. Our state's cheesemakers
produce more then 300 varieties, types and styles in cheese plants
that range from big business to cottage industry. With production
of more then 2 billion pounds annually, Wisconsin is the No. 1
cheesemaker in the nation and state cheese comprises about 30% of all
domestically made cheese.
The first state to grade cheese on quality, Wisconsin possesses
the highest standards in the country for cheese and cheesemakers,
according to the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. All cheese must be
made under the direct supervision of a licensed cheesemaker. In
