Article: Grilled cheese is a slice of life

I took my three daughters on vacation to New York City last summer to broaden their horizons. Show them the skyscrapers, tour the museums, attend a show, introduce them (as my budget allowed) to interesting new foods.

So there we were, in a quaint sidewalk cafe on the Upper West Side . . . in a Disneyesque theme restaurant on Seventh Ave. . . . and what did my 11-year-old twins insist on ordering?

Their usual: grilled cheese. In that respect, we could have stayed in Milwaukee. Someday, they will outgrow this single-minded approach to restaurant dining. But even when they do, I expect the grilled cheese sandwich to remain a favorite, if only at home. Everyone knows the formula for ...
