Crop-drowning torrents in Florida and California will affect what
Milwaukeeans pay for produce this winter, but don't start worrying
about $2 lettuce yet.
Americans feast from an international garden, said Tony Gagliano,
of A. Gagliano Inc., wholesalers at 300 N. Jefferson St. Not even
that old rainmaker El Nino can wash out every row.
Florida's floods and tornados followed a Mexican freeze and
California storms that knocked tomato flowers off new vines in the
Salinas Valley, Gagliano said. In response, he said, recent
wholesale tomato prices doubled from $10 to $20 per 25-pound box.
