Prosecutors returned Wednesday to examining Monica Lewinsky's activities inside the White House, summoning the head of Oval Office operations and the aide who hired Lewinsky and later transferred her to the Pentagon.

The White House, meanwhile, said it was trying to avoid a showdown over President Clinton's invoking executive privilege to stop confidant Bruce Lindsey from having to testify about certain conversations he had with the president.

Individuals familiar with the court proceedings, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lindsey declined to answer certain questions during a grand jury appearance last week on the grounds the information might be covered by executive privilege. ...
