An alderman has proposed that the county sales tax, which is due
to end in 2000, be made permanent in order to lower property tax
levies in the county.
Ald. Ron Voigt, who also serves as the Ozaukee County register of
deeds, proposed a resolution in the city's Finance Committee to make
the half-percent sales tax permanent so that roughly $4 million in
yearly sales tax revenue could be shared with municipalities for
property tax relief.
Voigt said the flood of tourists who come to Ozaukee County each
year could help pay for property tax relief through the sales tax.
"I like the idea that people from Illinois are going to help us
lower taxes here," Voigt said.
