Wisconsin is still the land of cheese.

It made nearly one-third of the nation's cheese last year, maintaining its position as the leading producer among states, the Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics Service said Friday.

California, having replaced Wisconsin several years ago as the top milk producer by volume, was runner-up in cheese in 1997 and was No. 1 in butter, the report said. Wisconsin's 1997 output of cheese was virtually the same as its 1996 record production of 2.1 billion pounds.
