Article: State won't renew Red Cliff compact Financially struggling tribe is first to be refused; Bayfield casino may close

Gov. Tommy Thompson's top aide said Friday the state would not renew its gaming compact with the financially troubled Red Cliff tribe, a move that could close the Chippewa band's lone Bayfield casino in December.

Administration Secretary Mark Bugher said in Madison that the tribe had insisted on a 10-year compact, admission of 18-year-olds and waiver of a proposed annual payment of $95,000 to the state terms Thompson could not accept.

Red Cliff Chairman George P. Newago, meanwhile, described Thompson as unreasonable and intransigent in his approach to negotiations with "the poorest Indian tribe in this state." With expiration of the existing compact, Bugher said, talks could begin on an ...
