Gov. Tommy Thompson's top aide said Friday the state would not
renew its gaming compact with the financially troubled Red Cliff
tribe, a move that could close the Chippewa band's lone Bayfield
casino in December.
Administration Secretary Mark Bugher said in Madison that the
tribe had insisted on a 10-year compact, admission of 18-year-olds
and waiver of a proposed annual payment of $95,000 to the state
terms Thompson could not accept.
Red Cliff Chairman George P. Newago, meanwhile, described Thompson
as unreasonable and intransigent in his approach to negotiations
with "the poorest Indian tribe in this state."
