California now has more dairy cows than Wisconsin.

For the first time ever, California farmers in May surpassed Wisconsin in the number of dairy cows, government figures released Tuesday show.

The new figures are the latest and most obvious sign of Wisconsin's slide in dairying dominance. California in August 1993 surpassed Wisconsin in total milk production and has remained the top-producing state ever since. Now, it's No. 1 in the number of cows. Wisconsin's dairy herd totaled 1.368 million in May, according to the Wisconsin Agriculture Reporting Service. That's 2,000 cows fewer than California.
