Chinese President Jiang Zemin received President Clinton today in
a military ceremony on Tiananmen Square, the vast expanse through
which modern Chinese history has flowed, from the declaration of the
Communist state in 1949 to the crushing of democracy demonstrations
40 years later.
Clinton stood mute throughout, as is customary at such arrival
ceremonies. He and Jiang then inspected army troops and reviewed an
honor guard on ground that human rights advocates around the world
consider stained with the blood of martyrs.
Clinton has defended his appearance before the Great Hall of the
People on the edge of Tiananmen Square as the expected behavior of a
