Ernests Spics, of Latvia, stood in line for Wisconsin cheese curds
Wednesday.
Spics, who paid $3 for the deep-fried cheddar bits, said they
reminded him of something his grandmother made in Latvia. He
described how she took a dairy product, added ingredients he did not
know the English names for, and fried them for a few seconds, while
they "got bigger."
Dressed in a white vest with ornate piping and boots, he said he
was satisfied with his taste of Wisconsin.
"Very good," said Spics, the director of an ethnic studies center
at a university in Latvia, who came to Washington to be part of his
country's Folklife Festival exhibit on the National Mall. Another
