President Clinton said yesterday that "it would be a mistake"
to cancel his trip to China as critics are demanding, but his aides
are quietly exploring whether he can at least avoid the politically
explosive symbolism of a formal welcoming ceremony at Tiananmen
Square.
While the White House previously indicated that Clinton would
follow the traditional arrival path of foreign leaders visiting
Beijing, administration officials said yesterday they are not firmly
committed to the event and may present alternatives to the Chinese
rather than have the president appear at the site of the bloody
crackdown on a pro-democracy movement in 1989.
