District Attorney Paul Bucher on Friday appeared on the verge of
announcing a bid for state attorney general, as Republican leaders
called Bucher their leading contender to challenge Democratic
incumbent Jim Doyle.
Two of the governor's closest allies, Rep. Scott Jensen and James
Klauser, met late Friday with Bucher in his office. Bucher said he
had already talked to the governor.
If Bucher runs, he will have to give up his job as Waukesha
County's district attorney, a post he has held since 1988. Both
jobs are up for election this fall. He could not run for both
posts, and his term expires next January.
