The chairman of the Red Cliff Indian Reservation says he will
return to his job today after a two-week absence while authorities
investigate a shortage of more than $1 million.
George Newago denied being aware last month of accounting problems
that led to the shortage. However, he said, he anticipated being
blamed, and decided to take a leave.
His suspension as reservation administrator is expected to be
discussed today in a tribal council meeting, he said.
Newago walked out of a meeting two weeks ago while a study
committee told the Red Cliff band of Chippewa that $500,000 in
federal funds had been misappropriated to prop up businesses and
that $600,000 in advances on employees' ...
