Cutting the grass is getting greener.
The old gasoline-powered lawn mowers that spew out clouds of
pollutants along with chopped-up grass are giving way to cleaner
machines. These may be electric mowers or environmentally friendly
gasoline versions produced under new Environmental Protection Agency
regulations that took effect last year.
In May, Maryland's Department of the Environment will try to
speed the changeover by offering consumers who turn in operable
gasoline mowers rebates that can be used to purchase either electric
mowers or push mowers.
The rebate will be worth $50 on the purchase of an
electric-corded or rechargeable mulching mower, or $15 on the
