Mark McGwire, leading the major leagues with 27 home runs, left
the St. Louis Cardinals' game Monday night at San Diego in the first
inning because of lower back spasms. The Cardinals said his status
was day-to-day. McGwire walked off under his own power after
hitting a dribbler down the first-base line for an easy out.
McGwire, who set a big league record for the most home runs through
the end of May, is on a pace to break Roger Maris' one-season record
of 61 home runs set in 1961. The first baseman was on the disabled
list every season from 1992-'96 because of problems with his foot,
heel, back and ribs.
