The lure of the Kentucky Derby annually makes owners and trainers
push their horses into the big race when they are not ready for it.
This may be a harmless exercise in self-indulgence, but sometimes
horses are ruined by being asked to do too much too soon.
Rarely has there been such an egregious case of Derby
obsession as trainer Wayne Lukas's management of Grand Slam. The
colt is being asked to show that he belongs in the Derby as he runs
in the $325,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland this afternoon. Not
only is he likely to lose, but his future could be compromised.
Only a few months ago, Grand Slam had prospects as bright as
any member of his generation. He won the Grade I Futurity ...
