Staring at an Aug. 1 deadline to adopt formal academic standards,
many Wisconsin school districts are simply accepting the version
developed by a state council, Lt. Gov. Scott McCallum said Tuesday.
McCallum, who led the Governor's Council on Model Academic
Standards, said 80 out of 86 school districts recently polled by one
of his aides said they had adopted the state's set of academic
goals.
Because there are 426 school districts, McCallum's survey included
about one out of every five.
Of the six districts surveyed who had not adopted the state
standards, five were still studying the issue and one, Beloit, had
adopted its own set of standards, McCallum said. The poll included
