What is it about pi the mathematical concept you struggled with
in high school that is so intriguing?
Perhaps it's that pi is so, well, irrational. That is, it goes on
forever with no apparent pattern. Or maybe it's that pi relates to
the circle, a form at once simple and mysterious a figure with no
beginning and no end.
Whatever the reason, pi seems to be all around us these days.
It's the title of a movie, the subject of a book, "The Joy of Pi"
by David Blatner, and the focus of a number of Web sites.
"Pi," a movie produced for $60,000 and shot in black and white,
takes on theoretical mathematics but is more like "The Twilight Zone"
