The kit for making this "Red Poppy" quilt was a wedding gift to
the owners, Genevieve and Richard Wainwright of Racine, more than 60
years ago. They received it from their employer, the late Mary
McElwain, owner of the Mary A. McElwain Quilt Shop in Walworth. The
quilt will be shown at the Pabst Mansion.
McElwain had hired Genevieve Peters to work in her new quilt shop
in 1932, shortly after Peters graduated from high school. Six
months later McElwain hired Richard Wainwright.
The two young people worked together for almost five years before
