Article: Reno starts inquiry into Gore, money Justice Department to examine campaign finance allegations

Attorney General Janet Reno on Wednesday triggered a 90-day Justice Department inquiry of campaign finance allegations involving Vice President Al Gore that could lead to an investigation by an independent counsel, officials said.

A focus of the inquiry, which must be approved by a three-judge panel that oversees the implementation of the Independent Counsel Act, will be notes from a Gore aide that appear to contradict the vice president's account of his role in fund raising for the 1996 campaign.

A Justice Department statement released late Wednesday said it "will not be in position today to confirm any reports or make any further comment on its campaign finance investigation."
