Hurricane Georges reached Cuba and threatened the Florida Keys on
Wednesday after making a shambles of much of Puerto Rico, the
Dominican Republic and Haiti.
At least 70 people were reported killed in the Dominican Republic,
and more than 40 died elsewhere.
Bracing for death and destruction in Cuba, President Fidel Castro
put his cabinet on alert and said the country's armed forces would
help get medicine, food and other help to hurricane victims after
Georges passes.
"No one will be forgotten in this new battle by the Cuban people,"
Mexico's official Notimex news agency quoted Castro as saying. "We
are a nation that has overcome adversity with unity."
