An exhibit at the Library of Congress presents new
information, uncovered by the FBI, on a famous Jeffersonian phrase
-- "wall of separation between church and state" -- and highlights
the often neglected fact that federal buildings in Washington were
regularly used for worship services in the early days of the
Republic.
The exhibit opened Thursday as the House of Representatives
prepared to vote on the controversial Religious Freedom Amendment,
which would have allowed the use of public funds for religious
schools and ended the ban on school-sponsored prayer.
The amendment failed on a 224 to 203 vote, far short of the
two-thirds majority needed to send it to the Senate.
