Cheese gifts distributed by a Wisconsin congressman to his
colleagues are a tasty attempt to win support for reforming milk
price-support programs, he says.
U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) said he advises the
recipients that they could improve their constituents' chances of
savoring Wisconsin cheese if changes were made in the federal
marketing order.
"Maybe if they know what great cheese we have, they will repeal
the milk marketing system," Sensenbrenner said in an interview from
Washington, D.C.
Dairy farmers in Wisconsin and Minnesota say the U.S. Department
of Agriculture's traditional pricing system favors other regions at
their expense.
