Girls had fun at the 52nd annual Tony Awards in New York last
night as the best-director prizes for both musical and play went to
women: Julie Taymor for "The Lion King" and Garry Hynes for "The
Beauty Queen of Leenane."
This history wasn't made in prime time, of course -- Heaven
forbid -- but on the hourlong PBS show before the network broadcast,
to which the unimportant awards for directing, score and book of a
musical, and all the design awards were relegated. And hey, why not?
It's not as if any of the recipients can sing or dance. Keep 'em out
of the spotlight.
