When Juan Gonzalez won his first American League most valuable
player award in 1996, he squeezed past Seattle's Alex Rodriguez by a
mere three points in the balloting.
It was a lot easier for Gonzalez the second time.
The Texas Rangers' powerful rightfielder again won the MVP trophy
Wednesday, easily outdistancing Boston's Nomar Garciaparra and New
York's Derek Jeter in voting conducted by the Baseball Writers
Association of America.
Gonzalez, 29, collected 21 of a possible 28 first-place votes to
tally 357 points, far ahead of Garciaparra's total of 232 and
Jeter's 180. Gonzalez and Garciaparra were the only players listed
