With lawmakers rushing to wrap up business and go home to campaign
for re-election, President Clinton demanded Friday that Congress
finance his proposals for hiring teachers, building schools and
other education initiatives.
House Republican Whip Tom DeLay of Texas countered, "The American
people don't want more spending."
Appearing on the White House South Lawn, Clinton and congressional
Democratic leaders accused Republicans of spending the year killing
a tobacco settlement, a higher minimum wage, campaign finance law
overhaul and protections for managed health care patients.
